Sixty-four-year-old John Revels, who allegedly went on a day long shooting spree of relatives and people he knew, was killed when he turned the gun on himself on Friday rather than be arrested, according to reports.
The manhunt for Revels began on Thursday afternoon after Los Angeles police were called to a shooting in the 12900 block of Doty Avenue, around 4 p.m., according to Lt. Aimee Yoshida of the Hawthorne Police Department the Daily Mail reports.
Yoshida said that two victims were found in the home and both were taken to a local hospital. However, while one man suffering from a gunshot wound to the arm remains in stable condition, the other, who suffered a gunshot wound to the head was removed from life support on Friday after it was determined he was brain dead.
The Los Angeles Times reports that Revels, who had allegedly been seen in the vicinity of the crime, had disappeared in his Gold colored Jaguar.
About an hour and a half later, a man believed to be Revels’ brother was shot in the 1600 block of West 36th Place in South Los Angeles, according to police reports. After detectives determined that the vehicle used in the shooting matched the description of Revels’ Jaguar, they informed the Hawthorne police.
The victim of the second shooting, believed to be Revels’ brother, remains in the hospital in stable condition.
“At that point, we knew he shot at least two in Hawthorne – people he knew and his brother,” said Lt Yoshida. “So agencies were searching for him across California,” he added.
A California Highway Patrol car spotted Revels’ Jaguar on Friday afternoon, parked with a flat tire alongside the southbound 15 Freeway near Ghost Town Road, just north of Barstow, according to authorities. The officers called for backup, but when they arrived and attempted to approach Revels’ vehicle, he fatally shot himself, police said.
Although detectives are still waiting for a formal coroner’s identification and report into the man’s death, they believe it to be Revels, who was wanted in connection with the deadly shooting rampage and a gun was found next to his body.
Revels allegedly killed at least two people during the rampage and left another two wounded, said Yoshida. He added that he allegedly took the life of his live-in girlfriend, 62-year-old Cornelia McIntosh and left his brother gravely wounded.
The body of McIntosh was found later during a search of Revels’ home in the 15800 block of Greenrock Avenue in Lancaster on Friday afternoon.
Although it has not been established if Revels was responsible for his girlfriend’s death, who died of a gunshot wound, authorities say he may have killed her before the other shootings took place.
“What motivated the shootings? We don’t know at this point,” Yoshida said, adding that the investigation is continuing. “We know he knew all of his victims,” he added.
