A Chicago family is considering legal action against a funeral home after finding out their mother was already buried by another family, CBS Chicago reports.

Monique Williams was readying her mother Ella Mae Rutledge’s funeral service at the Leak and Sons Funeral Home in the South Side. But when she arrived to approve the body for visitation, Williams realized the woman looked nothing like her mother. The family eventually discovered Rutledge was buried by another family on Friday at Mount Hope Cemetery.

CBS Chicago reports:

“Me and my brother say, ‘Dang! That don’t look nothing like Mom!’” Williams said. “The wig that I bought for her, I pulled it back. This lady got black hair. My mother has gray hair. I said, ‘Oh, no,’ They 100 percent identified the person that they buried, on yesterday, as their mother. I said, ‘You all done lost my mother.’”

Williams told reporters the family who buried her mother allowed the body to be exhumed. While she waits for confirmation, Williams says she’s shocked about the mix-up, suggesting the funeral home create a better identification system.

The funeral home didn’t release a statement out of respect for both families.
